From Arkansas to Chicago: A Journey I’ll Never Forget

There are moments in this work that stay with you forever, and our recent trip to Chicago for the 10th NMAC Biomedical HIV Prevention Summit is one I’ll carry with me for a lifetime.

If I’m being honest, there was a time when I never would have imagined myself here. I never would have thought that I would become such an integral part of what Arkansas RAPPS does. To go from simply wanting to make a difference to actually standing in rooms where that difference is recognized, it is humbling in a way that’s hard to fully explain.

From the moment we touched down, the energy felt different. Chicago welcomed us with its bold skyline and cool breeze, but more than that, it felt like we were stepping into something bigger than ourselves. This wasn’t just another conference. It was a space filled with people who care deeply, who are doing the work, and who are fighting every day to move HIV prevention forward.

And then came a moment I still replay in my head.

We were named a finalist for the PrEPpy Awards, and our Stay Ready campaign brought home 2nd place.

Sitting in that room, surrounded by organizations from across the country, I already felt proud. But when our name was called, it hit differently. It wasn’t just applause, it was validation. It was a reminder that the work we’re doing back home matters. That the long days, the hard conversations, and the commitment to our community are being seen.

More than anything, this experience was personal.

It reminded me why I started. It reminded me that growth is real. And it showed me that sometimes you end up in places you never thought you’d be, doing things you never imagined you could do.

This summit wasn’t just about recognition. It was about connection. Every conversation, every session, every shared moment added something meaningful to my journey. I didn’t just walk away inspired, I walked away changed.

Coming back to Arkansas, I feel recharged, refocused, and even more committed than before. Because now I know, without a doubt, that what we’re building at Arkansas RAPPS is powerful, and I’m proud to be a part of it.

This was more than a trip.

It was a milestone. A celebration. A lifelong memory.

And for me personally, it was proof that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
